Child Support in Michigan

Child support is determined by the Michigan Child Support Guidelines. These guidelines calculate child support using a mathematical formula and are updated periodically to take into account conditions such as inflation and standards of living.  The Michigan Child Support formula sets support at a number after factoring in numerous conditions which include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • The income of parents
  • Education of the Parents
  • The number of children
  • Number of overnight visitations per year
  • Heath Insurance costs
  • Day Care costs

The Family Law Attorneys at Van Tubergen & Treutler, PLLC, have been helping clients resolve their Child Support issues while fostering a greater understanding of its process.  It is important for our clients to realize that  support is calculated after considering various factors set forth in the Michigan Child Support guidelines. However, unique variations may arise where one parent remarried and is not working due to the new spouse’s income. The Guidelines permit the courts to take into account several variations regarding a parent’s income and in some cases the courts may “impute” (income that could be earned but currently isn’t) income for the purpose of calculating support.

Support can be modified by either parent filing a motion with the court. The party seeking a change in support must show that there has been a change in circumstances, meaning some type of change in either parent’s income, in order for the support amount to be modified.  For a free initial consultation to address your Child Support or any Family law matter, contact Van Tubergen & Treutler, PLLC today!  616-844-3000
